운중화랑 여섯번째 동행전

운중화랑은 특별한 인연으로 맺어진 예술가들의 2인전인 <동행> 시리즈를 정기적으로 선보입니다. 가족, 친구, 선후배, 혹은 사제지간으로 만나 영감을 주고받으며 각자의 세계를 구축해 온 두 작가들의 작품을 통해, 그들의 관계성이 예술적 성취에 어떻게 투영되었는지 조명하고자 합니다.

이번 <동행> 시리즈의 주인공은 '가시버시(부부)'라 불리는 추니박·지오최 두 작가입니다. 지난 30여 년간 함께 길을 떠나온 두 분은 서로에게 가장 냉철한 비평가이자 풍부한 영감의 원천이었습니다. 지기지우(知己之友)로 시작해 고된 창작의 길을 함께 걸어온 두 예술가는 이제 한국 화단의 현대적 변주를 이끄는 든든한 중진으로 자리매김했습니다.

산허리에 구름이 머무는 운중화랑에서 열리는 이번 <가시버시의 동행> 전은 두 작가의 오랜 공감과 그 속에서 빛나는 서로 다른 개성을 함께 마주하는 여행이 될 것입니다. 작은 인연에서 시작된 이들의 작업 이야기가 우리 일상의 관계처럼 친근하고도 흥미롭게 다가가기를 기대합니다.

Companion: Gashibeoshi’s Journey_Jioh Choi & Chuni Park _ Duo Show . . . Woonjoong Gallery proudly presents the series, a recurring two-person exhibition showcasing artists joined by special bonds. By featuring pairs who are family, friends, colleagues, or mentors and mentees, we aim to illuminate how their unique relationships are woven into the fabric of their artistic achievements. The protagonists of this edition are Chuni Park and Gi-ok Choi, a couple affectionately referred to by the traditional Korean term Gashibeoshi. Over the past thirty years of traveling the world together, they have served as each other's most candid critics and richest sources of inspiration. What began as a deep, soulful friendship (Jigi-ji-u) has evolved into a lifelong artistic partnership, establishing them as prominent figures leading the modern evolution of Korean painting. Held at Woonjoong Gallery—a space where clouds linger gracefully along the mountainside—this exhibition, titled , invites you on a journey to witness their long-standing empathy and their distinct, vibrant individualities. We hope the story of their work, born from a simple encounter and grown into an extraordinary bond, resonates with you as an engaging and relatable narrative of life and art.

MEET ARTIST_JIOH CHOI

Ji-Oh Choi was born in Seoul in 1966 and graduated from Hongik University with a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in Oriental Painting. She addresses themes such as 'Imaginary Garden' and 'Love, Travel, and Contemplation,' drawing inspiration from energy and emotions found in nature and daily life, aiming to convey messages of happiness and healing to the viewer.

Since her first solo exhibition in 2008, she has held approximately 18 solo shows. Her recent exhibition, Beyond the Gaze, Where Time Lingers (《시선 너머, 시간이 머문 자리》), showcased painterly landscapes embodying 'pausing and contemplation.' Her works feature symbolic elements like the 'fried egg' (representing a gift of joy), particularly the yolk.

Choi combines her traditional Oriental painting background with modern materials such as acrylics and mother-of-pearl, and actively expands the boundaries of media through collaborations with media artists. Furthermore, she actively engages with the public through successful art collaborations with companies like Samsung Electronics and Riemann Korea, maintaining a vibrant career.

Artist Statement

이 작품들은 어떤 대기현상에 관한 담론, 또는 그러한 취향들 속에 잠재해 있는 대부분의 무질서와 약간의 질서 등에 관한 것이다. 이러한 종류의 의미구분은 전혀 거창한 것이 아니다. 그것은 너무나 사소하기 때문에 오히려 정형화되어 버릴 듯한 모든 불연속적인 시간들 속에서 제각기 움직이고 있다.

나에게 있어서 현대미술이란, 깊은 산속 숲속에서 사람들 눈에 발견되지 않고 생겨났다. 사라지는 식물들의 자유롭고 은밀한 생태나, 끊임없는 관찰과 계산에 의해서 세계의 증거물들을 잡아내려는 노력에 관계하고 있는 과학 등과 같은 모습으로 보여지곤 했다. 저 알 수 없는 사물들을 둘러싼 엄청난 자유와 규칙들 속에서 지금의 미술이 갖추어야 할 조건들은 어떠한 것들일까.

인간은, 미술은 그 이름을 걸고 예전부터 현실적인 것에서부터 이야기의 질서, 의미의 기승전결, 재현의 다양한 결과 등을 흠모해 왔던 것 같다. 그러나 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 이 세계는, 사물들은 미술이 집요하게 던지는 판단과 분류의 촘촘한 그물 사이로 항상 매혹적으로 빠져 나아간다. 이러한 절망과 그때마다 나타나는 유혹들이 나와 현대미술 주변을 서성거리고 있다.

나의 미술은, 오래전부터 서로 전혀 관계없는 다수의 공간들 속에서 살아 움직이거나 죽어서 떠도는 영혼들의 날개 짓, 혹은 그 그림자들, 그것의 주름진 교차의 음계 속으로 사라져가는 것들에 대한 예찬, 절절한 그리움 같은 망설임의 징후들 속에서 꿈틀거리고 있다.

그것은 바로, 바닷물이 끊임없이 밀려와 만들어내는 물거품의 유리알만큼이나 눈부신 무질서들 속에서 천천히 움직인다. 그리고 또 그것은 어떤 질서와 같이 출발한다. 그러나 아무리 애를 써봐도 소용이 없다. 나는 그곳에 도달하지를 못한다.

MEET ARTIST_CHUNI PARK

Chuni Park (born 1966), a Korean painter who graduated from Hongik University, has been actively working, notably winning the Dong-A Ilbo Artist of the Year Award in 2007.

From 2016 to 2018, he focused on plein-air painting in the hills, completing the "Forest of Healing," "Forest of Silence," and "Forest of Contemplation" series, establishing self-healing and introspection as his core themes. In the "Forest of Contemplation" especially, he expressed spiritual liberation through faceless figures and a red sofa.

More recently, aiming to globalize Korean painting, he expanded his scope, exploring the vast canyons of Utah and Nevada in the US to create the series "The Untraveled Road, Unfamiliar Landscape."

Park continuously experiments with his techniques, using ink and acrylic on hanji (Korean traditional paper) to adapt his drawing style in the face of overwhelming nature, viewing the intense physical labor as a path to meditation. His works are currently held in major institutions like the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), and he continues to exhibit widely both domestically and internationally.

‘인간의 눈으로 감각 할 수 없는 것들에 대한, 그 철학적 의문에 대하여’

내가 생각하는 그 것은 우리가 알지 못하는 숭고미와도 같은 수평선을 따라, 내 눈과 태양이 함께 넘어가는 그 감각 너머의 초월적 세계와도 같다. 아주 오래전 어디선가 보았던, 모여들었다가 부서지고, 다시 흩어지는 파도처럼, 혹은 우리 주변을 항상 맴돌지만 결코 눈에 보이지 않는 불연속적인 바람 같은 것들이 바로 그것이다.

나의 예술적 실천으로서 반회화적 회화는, 관념과 현실 사이, 그리고 지금-여기와 과거 사이에서 끊임없는 부딪침을 만들어 내는 일이다.

역설적이게도, “나는 예술이라는 형식의 특수한 물질을 작품으로 보여주거나, 드러내거나, 또 만들어내려 한 것들이 아니다.”

‘단지 기억이자 기록이었는지도 모른다.’
