PARK CHUL

Park, Chulis a central person among in Hanji art filed. He has been recognized as one of representative artists from Hanji work that he has his own unique style of art work which is molding methods. It is a kind of Korean paper relief art work. In the 1980s, he started to make a Hanji(Korean paper)relief art. At that time, he often visits villagers who were in a crisis that could be submerged to the construction of An-dong dam. And there, he found out the residents have been left over objects which are a round straw mat which is spread under the millstone, straw mat, roof end tile, the door. Hewas interested those things.  He brought these things to the studio and he started adapt to using them in his art works. It is from this time that Park Chul's work on Korean paper, which has been going on for over 30 years, has been started. During the early 90's to mid-90's, Park focused on harmonizing the images of violin, straw mattress, and wadang (roof end tile)'s image on a single screen. He wanted to combine very sharpen figuration in one of the Western style musical instruments the violin, with crude emotion texture which is the straw mat. It is presumed that they tried to open another aesthetic possibility through the preparation of the heterogeneous formative beauty conceived in different cultures. Park Chunl's devotion to the Korean paper and his enthusiasm for compassion are highly praised in his work over the past 30 years and this works transformation of various materials and materials through the relief technique is a major factors. In recent years, he dyes coloring materials such as natural dyes such as Ogeaja, Vinh(a betel palm), Clove, Acorn, Mugwort, Safflower, and Yellow White are used. In this his eco-friendly attitude is expected to attract more attention as it is well suited to the so-called well-being era. In addition, one of the reasons why his work is pay attended that is in his perspective longing for the nature aspect. The civilization becomes the as machine progresses, human minds become enthusiastic about nature, it is based on the "creation and disappearance," and same time. In this circumstance Park Chul's Hanji art works serve as catalysts to direct our minds to nature.​

박철은 한지화가 중에서도 중심적인 인물이다. 그만의 독특한 조형 방식으로 인하여 일찍이 대표적인 한지화가 중 한 사람으로 인정받아 왔다. 일종의 한국 종이 부조회화가 바로 그것이다. 그의 한국 종이를 이용한 부조회화가 시작된 것은 1980년대 이다. 당시 그는 안동댐 건설로 인하여 수몰될 위기에 처한 시골 마을을 자주 찾아가곤 했는데, 주민들이 버리고 간 맷방석이나 멍석, 기와, 문짝 따위에 관심을 가지게 되었다. 그는 이런 물건들을 작업실에 가지고 와 작품에 활용하기 시작했다. 지금까지 계속되고 있는 박철의 한국 종이 부조 작업은 이때부터 비롯된 것이니, 어언 30여년의 성산을 헤아린다.

90년대 초반에서 중반에 이르는 기간에 박철은 바이올린과 맷방석, 와당의 이미지를 하나의 화면에 조화시키는 작업에 관심을 기울였다. 서양악기의 하나인 바이올린이 지닌 날렵한 형태미와 맷방석의 투박하나 정감이 있는 자태를 결합시키고자 했던 것이다. 서로 다른 문화권에서 잉태된 이질적인 조형미의 대비를 통하여 또 다른 미적 가능성을 열어가고자 했던 것으로 짐작된다. 박철이 한국 종이에 기울인 정성과 참구 의욕은 지난 30여년간에 걸쳐 제작한 작품에 고스란히 담겨 있는데, 부조 기법을 통한 다양한 소재와 재료의 변용은 그의 작품을 매우 개성적인 것으로 만든 주 요인이다.

최근에는 오재자, 빈랑, 정향, 도토리, 쑥, 홍화, 황백과 같은 천연의 염색재료를 조색에 사용하고 있다. 그의 이러한 친환경적 태도는 이른바 웰빙시대에 걸맞는 것이어서 더욱 시선을 끌 것으로 기대된다. 이와 더불어 그의 작품이 주목되는 또 하나의 이유는 스스로 그러한 ‘자연’ 의 상태를 동경하는 데 있다. 기계 문명이 진행될수록 인간의 마음은 자연을 동경하게 되는데, “생성과 소멸” 에 바탕을 둔 박철의 한지작품은 우리의 마음을 자연으로 향하게 하는 촉매의 역할을 하고 있는 것이다.
