JEONG SEO IN
태운 한지가 아주 얇게 겹겹이 붙여져 한지가 겹쳐져서 보여주는 효과와 불이라는 강렬한 소재가 한지와 만나 태워져 소멸하는 과정에서 역설적으로 새로운 선과 이미지가 생성되는 작업을 한다. 소멸과 생성의 과정이 끊임없이 일어나는 자연과 세상의 순환적 이치의 과정을 태워서 표현하는 방법으로 작품을 제작함으로써 지필묵을 대체하는 또 다른 표현방법으로 모색해 나가고 있다. 태운 선이 모여 이미지의 형태를 만들어 나가기 때문에 불로 태우는 행위가 완전한 사라짐을 의미하지 않는다. 그것들이 모여 다른 생성 원리로 작용하기 때문에 완전한 의미의 ‘태움’이라고 정의할 수 없다. ‘불로 태우다’라는 것이 결국 사그라져 재가 되고 없어져야 하는데, 중간 지점에서 의도적으로 멈춘다. 결국 완전한 의미의 태움이 아니기 때문에 본인의 작품은 멀리서 보일 때 태웠지만 태운 것처럼 보이지 않아야 한다. 그리고 가까이 다가와서 작품을 보았을 때, 태운 선과 종잇조각을 꼴라주하여 만들음을 알게 된다. ‘태우다’라는 의미가 ‘태어나다’라는 의미로 변환되는 과정이 본인의 작업의 중요한 맥락으로 작용된다. ‘재현된 이미지’는 동양적 시점으로 그려진 산수풍경처럼 보이지만, 자세히 들여다보면 다분히 회화적인 기법이 어우러져 재조립되고 반추하여 본인의 기억된 부분을 중점으로 골격, 산세, 중첩, 자연의 순환 원리의 개념에 대한 이야기를 풀어내는 작업을 진행하고 있다.
최근 나는 이러한 풍경을 바라보는 서로 다른 사람들의 시선에 대하여 관심을 가지고 태워짐을 이용해 화면을 만들어내는 회화 작업과 함께 ‘불 로 태운다’는 행위의 의미에 집중해 태워진 형상 자체가 드러나 무언가가 되는 입체물을 제작하여 작가와 관객을 연결고리가 될 매체로써 확장시켜나가고 있다.
